How Many Portable Toilets Do You Need for a Wedding?

Planning a wedding comes with a long list of decisions. Venue, catering, music… and then there’s something people don’t always think about until later, toilets.

If your wedding is outdoors, in a marquee, or at a venue without enough facilities, getting the right number of portable toilets is essential. Too few, and you’ll have queues. Too many, and you’re spending money you don’t need to.

So how do you get it right?

The Simple Rule of Thumb

A good starting point is one toilet per 50 guests for a 4–6 hour event. So, for example:

  • 100 guests → 2 toilets
  • 150 guests → 3 toilets
  • 200 guests → 4 toilets

This works well for most weddings where guests are arriving, eating, drinking, and using facilities at a steady pace. But as you’ll see below, weddings rarely follow a steady pace.

But Weddings Aren’t “Standard” Events

Weddings don’t behave like festivals or construction sites. You get natural peaks — just after the ceremony, during the drinks reception, and between courses — where demand spikes suddenly.

That means you often need to slightly overestimate rather than cut it close. Ask yourself:

  • Will everyone be arriving at the same time?
  • Is there a long drinks reception?
  • Are you serving alcohol throughout the day?

If the answer is yes (which it usually is at a wedding), it’s safer to add an extra unit.

Don’t Forget the Duration

The longer your wedding runs, the more important capacity becomes.

  • Short weddings (3–4 hours) – standard ratios usually work fine
  • Full-day weddings (6–10+ hours) – consider an extra toilet or arrange mid-event servicing
  • Multi-day celebrations – you’ll need a planned servicing schedule to keep units fresh throughout

More time means more usage. Simple as that. At WC Portables, we offer flexible servicing schedules for longer events across Hertfordshire, Essex, and London — so you’re never caught short mid-celebration.

What About Male vs Female Guests?

Women tend to use toilet facilities more frequently at events, and queues can build quickly if capacity is tight. For weddings, we generally recommend:

  • Unisex portable toilets as your main provision
  • An extra unit added for comfort and flow
  • Urinal units if you’re expecting a large proportion of male guests and want to take pressure off the main toilets

We can advise on the right mix when you get in touch. It depends on your guest list and the type of day you’re planning.

Standard Portable Toilets — Are They Right for a Wedding?

This is something worth thinking about early, especially if your wedding is outdoors or at a venue with limited facilities.

Standard portable toilets are practical, reliable, and completely self-contained. They’re built to handle steady use while staying clean and functional throughout the day. For many weddings, particularly relaxed garden parties, countryside setups, or informal receptions, they’re a perfectly suitable option.

The key is in how they’re presented and managed. When done properly, they feel far less “out of place” than people expect. That means making sure they’re:

  • Clean and well-presented on arrival
  • Fully stocked with toilet roll, hand sanitiser and optional luxury accessories
  • Positioned discreetly, away from main guest areas but still easy to access

For more formal weddings, some couples do look into luxury toilet trailers with features like flushing systems and running water. While we don’t supply those units, it’s worth knowing they exist if you’re aiming for a more premium setup.

That said, many weddings still opt for standard portable toilets and focus on the things that actually matter on the day — cleanliness, availability, and convenience. In reality, guests are far more likely to notice long queues or poorly maintained facilities than the type of unit itself.

At WC Portables, we provide high-quality, well-maintained standard portable toilets that are delivered on time, set up properly, and kept in excellent condition throughout your hire. If you’re unsure what’s right for your wedding, we’re always happy to help you find a setup that fits your plans, your space, and your budget.

Consider the Venue — You May Need Fewer Than You Think

Before hiring anything, check what your venue already provides.

If the venue has existing toilets, you may only need to supplement them rather than start from scratch. For example:

  • Venue toilets adequate for 80 guests
  • Total guest list: 150
  • You may only need 1–2 additional units to bridge the gap

It’s worth a conversation with your venue coordinator before you book.

Don’t Overlook Accessibility

Make sure your setup includes at least one accessible toilet unit where needed. This isn’t just about ticking a box, it’s about making sure every single guest feels comfortable and properly catered for. We supply accessible units as standard alongside our event range.

Placement Makes a Big Difference

Even the right number of toilets won’t help if they’re in the wrong place. A good rule is to keep them close enough for convenience, far enough to stay discreet, and positioned so our team can access them for servicing if needed.

They should always be on level, stable ground. Something worth checking with your venue before delivery day.

Book Early, Especially in Summer

Wedding season in Hertfordshire and Essex runs roughly from May through September, and availability for quality units. If your date is during peak season, it’s worth securing your booking as early as possible.

We’d hate for the perfect unit to already be taken.

A Quick Example

Let’s say you’re planning a wedding with 120 guests, running from ceremony through to the evening, with alcohol served throughout. A sensible setup might be:

  • 3–4 standard portable toilets, or
  • 1 luxury toilet trailer (which typically accommodates equivalent capacity in a more compact, elegant footprint)

This gives you enough capacity to handle peak times without queues building up and without over-spending.

The Bottom Line

For most weddings, you’re looking at around one toilet per 50 guests, with a small buffer added for comfort. From there, adjust based on duration, alcohol, and whether the venue already has facilities in place.

If you’re weighing up standard versus luxury, think about the feel of your day and don’t be afraid to ask.

At WC Portables, we’ve helped couples across Hertfordshire, Essex, and London get this right for years. Whether you need a couple of discreet standard units or a full luxury trailer setup, we’ll make sure your guests are looked after and that toilets are genuinely the last thing on your mind on your wedding day.
